SUSTAINABILITY AND CARBON REDUCTION
Retaining and adapting the structurally sound parts of the existing King Alfred complex represents a major opportunity for carbon savings compared to full demolition and rebuild.
Embodied Carbon Savings: The existing concrete frame, foundations, and shell contain tens of thousands of tonnes of embodied carbon. Reusing them prevents the environmental impact of demolition (estimated to release over 5,000 tonnes of CO₂) and avoids the emissions associated with manufacturing and transporting new building materials.
Alignment with Modern Sustainability Goals: Reuse over demolition is increasingly recognised as best practice in reducing climate impacts. This approach would demonstrate leadership and innovation aligned with council climate emergency declarations and net-zero ambitions.
