Council Planning Application
We are a team of passionate Brighton and Hove residents who are campaigning for a realistic, community-led alternative vision to Brighton & Hove City Council’s plans for the King Alfred Leisure Centre site in Hove.
Why we're objecting to the Council's proposal:
a reduction in usable leisure space of around 45% and a major reduction in family and leisure water space
a significant loss in flexible indoor activity space, reducing the ability for multiple sports and community uses to take place simultaneously.
severe limitations on the number and range of sports activities that can be provided for
Our alternative scheme provides:
a balanced, future-facing vision that preserves the site’s legacy while enhancing public benefit
a 50m swimming pool and preserves family and leisure water space
a seafront-focused design which optimises the site's spectacular location & includes promenade frontage
We believe the existing building can and should be retained, upgraded, and expanded—not demolished and replaced with high-rise flats and a significantly smaller leisure facility.
We support:
✅ Modernising the existing, structurally-sound King Alfred building while expanding the site’s potential as a sustainable, inclusive sports, leisure, and cultural hub
✅ Offering up to four times more community value for half the cost of the Council’s proposed new build
